Larry was preparing for Duck Season to open at the New Johnsonville Lease in a few short weeks. I was at home with a sick Gracie and making Lasagna for dinner. Jess and Dave were being Jess and Dave. It was a normal day. I sent a text to Larry to let him know dinner plans and did not expect to hear from him until he and the guys were on their way home. When the phone rang shortly before 4:00p I answered it with some sarcastic term of endearment as I usually do when Larry's number pops up ..... but it was not Larry. It was Nick. The ATV Larry was on hauling sandbags had slipped over the edge of the levee, his leg had been trapped by the handlebars, he could not get off, and the guys couldn't hold it. Larry and the ATV went over the edge. And our journey began.
Nick, James, and the others at the lease had done an amazing job tending to Larry and getting him EMS help... literally keeping his head above water. EMS took him to Waverly were he was Life-Flighted to Vanderbilt. Surgery rebuilt the crushed C-5 Vertebra, stabilized the breaks in C-4, and made a place for his spinal cord to recover and heal. Sixteen days later we departed for the Shepard Center (a spinal cord specialty hospital in Atlanta, GA.) where we remain today, and from where friends and family are assisting us to manage day to day tasks in Atlanta, upkeep of home, and prepare the house for Larry's return.
In the days leading up to my writing this the we have been carried on prayer, love, kindnesses, and our God who cares for us as he does the birds of the field, and gave us his Word to hold us in times of need. It is humbling and awesome the ways that our needs have been met ... sometimes by those who were asked, those who simply saw a need and offered to help, and some who simply did. We are blessed in ways I can not begin to explain.
